“That night, Jonas couldn’t sleep. The hours dragged by as he thought of the scenario that had taken place during the day. He had had the clear sensation that he could have avoided the scenario, that he could have wrenched out all the pain from that poor man’s chest, and that he could have cured whatever was wrong. What if I try such a thing and am exposed as a lunatic? he thought. How would I be able to explain this? What if the man died in my hands? They could even say that I was to blame. But Jonas’s doubt remained. Perhaps he could have saved the man. God, he thought, I’ve got to find the courage to follow my instincts the next time. I’ll just have to face the consequences, whatever they may be. Anything is better than being in this situation, having this doubt eating away at me.”
